Planning Your Best Year

Deep down inside, what would you really like to accomplish this year?  Probably most of the people I know noticeably “overbook” themselves.  So many things to get done, and never seemingly enough time.  What if you could simplify your schedule to only the most important things.

[Part 1 – Topic]

Consider setting aside a few minutes for making a list of everything you would like to accomplish this year.  As you brainstorm, continue to list all the ideas which come to mind.  Then, identify your top favorites as your possible priorities for this year.

Remember that planning is often best when noting your preferences and desired outcomes, but allowing for some changes along the way.   Over the next few weeks or months, consider focusing some extra attention on what you feel is “priority”.  And try to be a little flexible, whenever you feel the need to make any adjustments to your schedule.

If possible, select the number “one” most important thing for you to accomplish this year.  Focusing on just “one” goal or project or task should allow more strategic focused energy toward completion.  Investing some quality time each week until your priority number one is completed.

[Part 2 – Problem]

Planning seems only good and useful if and when you finish what you start, and complete your “desired” tasks with some form of “favorable” end result.  By taking a few minutes to brainstorm and then prioritize your list, you should at least be moving toward a positive end result.

Disappointments often come to those who are unsuccessful at completing their desired end results.  Please go easy on yourself if you have struggled in the past, and even feel the need to carry those frustrations with you in to this year.  Try to have an open mind that this year will be “your” best ever.

Stress may be the result of working so hard to complete your “full” list of things to complete for the year.  Remember, you do not need to completely accomplish everything you can possibly imagine within a dozen months or less.

[Part 3 – Solution]

My advice and encouragement for you is to try to “not” attempt the completion of “dozens” of things all at once, but focus only on “one” thing (at least for now).  You can always add a second item to “your” priority list once the first item is completed.

Of course, you will still have other responsibilities scheduled and hopefully timely completed (as likely expected of you).  By focusing on just one “priority” at a time, you will finish your number “one” thing, then your number “two” thing, and so on.

Getting started, your number “one” priority should be extremely important to you.  It may even be something you would otherwise get distracted away from.  As you identify what is the absolute most important thing for you to complete this year, consider setting aside at least an hour every week, or even every day.
