HIM & HER — Together (on the Same Page)

[Challenge]

Volunteer Together

Would you be willing to set aside a few hours to volunteer for something you already enjoy and willingly support?  Are you still interested if your loving spouse comes along to help?  Where would you like to invest some quality time with your other half, while doing something positive and being a blessing to others?

[Church]

Consider starting your list of volunteer opportunities with your local church.  Often, members will hear about upcoming ministry needs or programs through announcements in the service or bulletin.  Please feel free to also speak with your pastor or one of the church leaders.

There are really so many different ministries where your services could be useful.  If you enjoy cooking, perhaps helping with meals for seniors.  How about cleaning or performing maintenance, there always seems to be something needing human intervention.

Serving other humans in some capacity is incredibly honorable.  Assisting in the nursery, children’s ministry, teen activities, or even adult programs can be such a blessing.  How about the food pantry, clothing ministry, housing assistance, or career training?  So many ways to offer yourself to God in the form of Christian service.

[Community]

Depending on what is of interest to you, the local region may host different events throughout the calendar year.  Maybe start with the local website of events, looking for opportunities to volunteer.

Even assisting with setting up for the local fair or a music festival will get you connected with other people in your area.  Possibly an “arts and crafts” program for adults and children.  Even joining a group to clean up trash along the road.

Other options to consider should include the state or national parks if that would be of “interest” to you.  Preservation of land, buildings or equipment just may capture your interest.  Helping in a senior care program or reading a children’s story at the library may feel exceptionally good.  Sharing time with others is one way of being a blessing.

[Other]

If you are extremely limited by where you are currently living, consider creating your own program.  This may sound like a big project, yet simply offering to “help” one person you know for an hour could build a life-long relationship.  Maybe even getting some family and friends to help you, especially if the project may take you all day.

Teaching, tutoring, coaching, or mentoring will often leave a lasting “impact” for life.  Even writing encouraging words in a card or calling someone you know who may not have any family.  Sometimes what we perceive to be small can have significant results.

Honestly, anywhere there is a genuine “need”, an opportunity exists for ministry.  Remember, you are in the driver’s seat, and get to select where you wish to serve.  Be blessed as you willingly use your own means of sharing the love of God with other people.  Life is far too short to hold back.  Allow yourself to become that person whom someone else is waiting for, and longing to meet.

From one who forever remains…
